Dancing, make up and a six year old girl ~ northernmum

It would seem I am a little unprepared on my journey of motherhood.

Who knew that when Twin Girl bought a letter home from her dance class inviting her to audition for a medal test that they really took it so seriously.

The letter contained the following instructions…

Please ensure hair is curly,

Please ensure make up consists of a minimum of foundation, eye liner and red lipstick

Please hire or make a costume

What I read was….

Please ensure hair is curly, unless you are twin girls mum and as rubbish at hair curling as you are at paper mache

Please ensure make up consists of foundation, eye liner and red lipstick; unless you are twin girls mum who thinks this could be a little overkill for a six year old

Please hire or make a costume unless you are twin girls mum then you should definitely hire because if not your daughter will be scarred for life by your dressmaking efforts…

Fast forward four weeks…

We turned up to the audition and were greeted by a powder puff room filled with beautiful little girls made up better that any of my recent going out efforts.  Their hair was curled into ringlets that orphan Annie would envy and their costumes proved to me that when they drop their children at dance class they all scoot off round the corner for seamstress lessons whilst I find a stool in the working man’s club next door.

Using the power of GHD I wrestled with Twin Girl’s hair in a panic, twisting and scorching in a bid to add a curl or two.

It didn’t work…

I reached into my bag and sought out my ’emergency’ foundation and quickly blended it into my daughters unblemished cheeks – within moments I had turned her into a tangerine – if it had been Halloween she would have run the risk of someone trying to put a candle inside her head.

I didn’t have eye liner, I only had biro, and god damn it, it was blue, I contemplated it for a moment but then held back as I had forms to fill in at home and didn’t want to use up the ink….

We found a red lipstick at the nearest shop and, much to Twin Girl’s disgust, painted her lips a post box red.

The end result was interesting….

However, when twin girl took to the stage it all fell together.

The brightness of her top merely complemented the tint of the foundation  and her dancing took my breath away, I was unable to see anything except a beautiful nervous six year old shine through in a rather tricky first dance.

She passed with flying colours – with a page full of compliments and only one reference that her hair should be curled next time, any tips would be appreciated……

Check out my eldest on the dance floor….

  1. brilliant dancing there! I found out how seriously this dancing malarky is when Hanna went for her Tap exam….specific ribbons in her hair, tight buns, socks pulled up a to certain height….thankfully she no longer goes..

  2. she is brilliant!
however, the ranty side of me would be telling the freaking dance people to naff off with their lipstick and foundation – foundation!!! on a 6 year old. At 6 skin is amazing – foundation is an adult way of trying to re-create that kind of skin…..
where is twin boys dance routine??

  3. It sure brings a lump to the throat to see them on stage. Bit embarrasing when they start waving to you in the audience after the dance though.

You should have seen Hols for her last show. Thankfully we don’t have to do the curls thing but she did have to a face full of make-up (we had to add blusher and blue eyeshadow to the mix!). However the make up is there so they don’t look like washed out zombies under the lights plus it helps protect them from the heat of the lights (the last bit I did take with a pinch of salt).

You could curl her hair with rags (or those bendy sponge stick things if you can still get them) in damp hair the night before.

  4. I hope you were taking note of those moves ready for yoru next night out on the town! She did a fab job and seriously love her skirt.

  5. She’s absolutely lovely, but the make-up thing is seriously scary! I can’t believe it’s a requirement (italics needed here) x
