There’s nothing like a good wedding.
Footloose and childfree myself and he who helped create them headed back up home to Gods country to watch my little cousin and his beautiful bride finally tie the knot in the magnificent surroundings of Oulton Hall in Leeds.
We left twin boy and girl at home with the nanny dog and enough cheerios and cheese strings to keep them going until Monday. After hearing baby beautiful’s gurgles sounding distinctly southern we took her to my rather fabulous girlfriends house in t’north to ensure she starts speaking with a northern dialect.
The wedding was beautiful, the exquisitely presented bride and handsome groom almost brought me to tears with their personalised vows and later as we watched them twirl around the dance floor I had a melancholy moment as I stood in a room full of my much loved family members.
I come from a family who are very proud of their closeness and of being a ‘Pettit’. Clearly marriage robbed me of my maiden name however my rather large nose is proof enough that I still belong to the Pettit clan. The last time we all gathered together was to say goodbye to a much loved one so it was rather special is be together in happier times to celebrate love, life and unity.
The mother of the groom looked splendiferous and gave a reading at the ceremony that showed the love between mother and child doesn’t dwindle with age but truly grows stronger.
Being child free for the first time in six months ensured I got very over excited and welcomed the pink champagne a little too much. Apologies need to be sent to my other cousin who is expecting her first child next year; I may have been a little honest about the pain level of childbirth!
We had such a fabulous time at a perfect wedding, we danced for hours, he who helped create them has now got his daddy dancing style perfected. Having three children means our dancing shoes tend to be located in the rarely used dusty corner of the shoe cupboard so we need no encouragement to hit the checkered dance floor to show the world our moves!
I was immensely proud of myself as I managed to keep my heels on all day and not fall quietly asleep in a corner. We even stayed up until eleven o clock! I did hear rumours this morning that the bridesmaids didn’t get to bed until five am but am sure that I must have misheard, surely people don’t really do that?
The lovely bride and groom are off on their honeymoon, and all the hats are firmly back in their boxes. We have collected baby beautiful who greeted us with a wonderful heart breaking smile as we walked back into her life. Together the three of us are hurtling back from the north to the south for cuddles with the big little kids.
Do you know the best thing about leaving your kids for a night away?
Going home to them.

Sounds like you had a lovely time. I had a little chuckle at your ‘being a little too honest about the pain of childbirth’ moment 🙂
Ooooh, a night off! Glad you had fun! My too much to drink party trick is talking to people who are 25 – 27 weeks pregnant and saying “ooh you could have a Joseph!” hmmmmm lips move before brain engaged!
