Iceland: Fun Activities to Enjoy as a Family

Iceland is a travel destination that has gained popularity in recent years, being a great destination for all different types of travel. It is an especially great travel destination for families, especially ones with older children. With so much to see and do, there is something for everyone here, and with older children, you can really explore and get out into the exquisite nature that Iceland has to offer.

Whether you are planning on or decided on a trip to Iceland, here are a few family-friendly activities to do while visiting Iceland:

Take a dip in the Blue Lagoon

If you have seen popular photos of Iceland, chances are you have seen photos of the Blue Lagoon! It is worth a visit so you can take in the natural beauty of the waters, see this characteristics site, and take in the incredible views. There are different areas of the water too, so you can stick with your family or venture off for some solo relaxation. Luckily, it is located near Reykjavik so it is an easy site to get to for most as well.

Take one of the many family-friendly hikes 

Iceland has incredible hikes of all intensity levels, so you can surely find multiple options that will work for you and your family! For example, you can explore the trails around Lake Myvatn for some gorgeous view and well-paved trails, as well as the trails that are a bit more challenging but reward you with small waterfalls at Fjadrarglufur.

Whale watching

Whale watching is a popular activity in Iceland, and kids and adults of all ages will be excited to see the incredible wildlife and views from the water. You can catch a boat tour from the Old Harbour in Reykjavik, as well as explore a fjord such as Akureyri where you’ll see calmer waters and some beautiful nature.

Tour a glacier

Glaciers are found all throughout Iceland, making it a must to always be prepared to go explore. If your kids are older, you can go snowmobiling or ice-climbing across a glacier and explore. You can also go for a hike and explore the science and beauty of nature. If your kids are five-years-old or older, you can go on a tour of Skálafellsjökull Glacier via super jeep and then explore via the vice.

Go see the waterfalls

The waterfalls in Iceland are a must. Some favorites are Svartifoss Waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall, and the Majestic Gullfoss. These are easier waterfall hikes that you can get to with the family and really enjoy the beautiful scenery in Iceland. Pack some snacks for an adventure day out and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy these natural beauties.
